PRUs, YOTs and more…

“They are very skilled at engaging with what can be a very difficult age group.
It is always a positive experience for the young people and they always benefit very much from being able to explore different topical issues using creative expressions such as drama,
art and music. I would highly recommend the Chain Reaction Theatre Company to other professionals as a very valuable resource when working with young people.”
David Chambers, Key Worker,
London Borough of Barking & Dagenham Youth Offending Team

Chain Reaction is highly experienced in engaging ‘specialist’ groups, including vulnerable young people who are at risk of social exclusion due to a range of factors. We regularly work closely with different agencies to deliver work that supports young people with varied social, emotional and behavioural problems, and physical disabilities.

We often work with YOTs (Youth Offending Teams), YISPs (Youth Inclusion & Support Panels), PRUs (Pupil Referral Units), Tuition Centres, Reception and Reintegration Units and special schools.

“Chain Reaction Theatre Company has been involved in the Centre for some time…The pupils here are extremely vulnerable and bring with them a host of emotional and social issues, such as neglect, substance abuse, under age drinking, sexual promiscuity and the like.  I have found Chain Reaction Theatre Company and the work it does to be an excellent way of reaching our pupils and giving them the space to get in touch and acknowledge their feelings whilst addressing positively the issues in their lives.  We would welcome more input from them and the pupils would benefit greatly from any support the Company may offer, be it in the form of performances or workshops.”

PRUs, YOTs, YISPs and Tuition Centres

Many of these young people are particularly challenging – some are at risk of offending/have previously offended, whilst others may be engaging in other negative behaviours that are having a detrimental impact on their school life, their health or their social interaction.

The sessions we facilitate with these young people focus on helping them develop empathy and an understanding of the consequences of their behaviour, both in relation to their own lives and the effect they can have on those around them. We use drama and role-play to explore their ability to develop rewarding relationships and behaviours, and we explore practical conflict resolution techniques that they can take into their everyday lives.

“[They] gained a great deal from the experience, particularly from doing the drama workshop, with gains in self confidence that seem to have come from being involved in both this workshop and the previous drugs workshop. This group included some very low achieving year 11 students, and a year 9 student whose behaviour is often very challenging, and whose attendance has been a cause for concern but who has now started to attend more regularly….We have really valued the work done by Chain Reaction and would like you to pass on our thanks to the cast.”
Judy Holder, PSHE Coordinator, London Borough of Redbridge Tuition Service

Reception & Reintegration Units

We have also worked extensively with Reception & Reintegration Units (R&Rs), which support young people who have emotional problems, often connected to bullying, low self-esteem or problems at home. Within these sessions we deal with a range of issues, but the underlying focus is on providing a safe and supportive environment, giving personal attention, encouragement and praise and helping these vulnerable young people grow in confidence and self-esteem.

[Our students] are ultimately school phobic for a number of reasons. A majority have witnessed severe bullying, some are witness to drug and alcohol abuse, some are vulnerable for various reasons, all have social and emotional issues which affect their everyday lives.
Therefore whenever we get the opportunity to work with the Chain Reaction team, we devise a programme of work over a period of time which focuses the students and helps them identify strategies to boost their confidence and self-esteem. As a staff team, we always see some of our most frightened and unconfident students excel at drama activities.
Chain Reaction are also able to impart knowledge to our students in such a way that is memorable, current, and in-tune to our student body.
